Why Won't My Breaker Reset?
A breaker that will not reset is more than a nuisance. It may mean the breaker is still sensing a problem on the circuit. That problem could involve an overloaded circuit, short circuit, ground fault, damaged device, faulty appliance, or breaker issue.
The safest answer is simple: do not force it. A breaker is a protective device. If it refuses to stay on, the cause should be diagnosed before power is restored.
Why A Breaker May Refuse To Stay On
A breaker may not reset because the condition that caused the trip is still present. This can happen when a connected appliance or device has failed, an outlet or switch is damaged, a wire is loose or compromised, moisture is affecting a circuit, or the breaker itself is failing.
AFCI and GFCI breakers can also trip when they detect certain arc-fault or ground-fault conditions. These protective devices are important, but repeated trips should be evaluated rather than ignored.
JCM Expert Insight
When we troubleshoot a breaker that will not reset, we look for the reason the circuit is being protected. We check the circuit load, visible panel condition, connected devices, affected rooms, GFCI or AFCI protection, and signs of heat or damage. The goal is to restore power safely, not just temporarily.
Safety Warning
Never hold, tape, or force a breaker into the on position. Do not remove the panel cover or touch exposed electrical components. If the breaker trips immediately, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
When To Call A Licensed Electrician
Call JCM Electric if a breaker will not reset, trips immediately, controls an important room or appliance, affects kitchen, bathroom, garage, outdoor, or AC circuits, or comes with burning smells, buzzing, heat, or visible damage.

FAQ
Should I keep trying to reset the breaker?
No. If the breaker trips again or will not stay on, stop resetting it and call a licensed electrician.
Could the breaker itself be bad?
Yes, but the breaker may also be reacting to a real circuit problem. The circuit should be checked before replacing parts.
Is this an emergency?
It can be urgent if there is heat, smoke, burning smell, buzzing, sparking, or partial power loss. In those cases, call promptly.
